URL and Domain Cleaner
CRM Import-Ready Contact Cleanup
Want the whole file cleaned? We fix emails, phones, names and duplicates and return an import-ready CSV. $9 per 500 rows.
A website column usually holds a mix of "https://www.acme.com/contact?utm_source=x", "ACME.com", "www.acme.com/" and sometimes an email address. For matching companies, enriching data or importing into a CRM you want one thing: acme.com. Load your file below to get a clean domain for every row. It runs in your browser and the file stays on your computer.
URL and domain cleaner
Paste website URLs or emails one per line, or upload a CSV and name the website column. Each value is reduced to a clean domain: protocol, www, paths, query strings and ports are removed and the result is lower case. Free email domains such as gmail.com are flagged, and you can also output a full https:// URL.
Your file is read in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded or sent anywhere, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
Why clean domains matter in a CRM
HubSpot, for example, automatically deduplicates companies by the Company domain name property, and an import uses the primary and secondary domain values to match companies. If an import has no domain or other unique identifier, each row becomes a new company (source: https://knowledge.hubspot.com/records/deduplication-of-records). A domain written five different ways can therefore mean five company records.
If you are filling in a Google Business Profile, Google's help asks for the full website URL, including "http://" or "https://" (source: https://support.google.com/business/answer/3039617). Tick the website_url option to get that form as well.
What the cleaner does
- Removes the protocol (http://, https://), "www." and "www2.", paths, query strings, anchors and port numbers.
- Lower-cases the domain and trims trailing dots and slashes.
- Takes the domain from email addresses ([email protected] becomes acme.com) and marks it "taken from email".
- Flags free email providers such as gmail.com, yahoo.com and outlook.com, which are not company domains.
- Optionally reduces subdomains to the root domain, and handles common two-part endings such as .co.uk and .com.au.
- Flags values that are not a domain at all, such as "n/a" or a company name typed into the website field.
When not to reduce to the root
Leave the root-domain box unticked if different subdomains belong to different businesses, for example franchise locations or sites on a shared host such as name.wixsite.com. Reducing those would merge unrelated companies.
Next steps
- Use the domain column to find duplicates with the duplicate company finder.
- Tidy company names with the company name normalizer.
- Import a small test batch before the full file.
